Matcha white chocolate brownies

Indulge in the irresistible allure of bittersweet matcha brownies, boasting a delightful crackly crust, a luxuriously fudgy texture, and delightful chunks of white chocolate. It's the ultimate matcha delight!

These matcha brownies boast a delightful sweetness, and a rich fudgy texture, and are generously studded with large chunks of white chocolate. Matcha tends to dry out batters, potentially resulting in super crumbly brownies. If you're searching for the ultimate matcha brownies, look no further—these are it!

Matcha boasts a distinctive flavor profile, marrying sweetness with a subtle bitterness, and is renowned for its vibrant green hue. Widely embraced in culinary endeavors, baking, and traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, matcha has also gained popularity as a healthful ingredient. Rich in antioxidants, it offers a spectrum of potential health advantages.

Ingredients notes

  • White Chocolate: Utilized in two stages, white chocolate plays a crucial role in these brownies. Incorporating it into the batter contributes to a fudgy texture and adds sweetness. While optional, I enjoy adding extra white chocolate chunks at the end, enhancing the richness of the batter. Feel free to experiment with different chocolate varieties or nuts for a unique twist.
  • Unsalted Butter: Although unsalted butter is preferred, salted butter can be substituted. If using salted butter, omit the additional pinch of salt later in the recipe.
  • Matcha Powder: The star ingredient, high-quality culinary matcha powder is essential for imparting the distinct flavor and vibrant green color characteristic of these brownies.
  • Sugar: Plain white sugar is necessary for texture and balance. While the sweetness from the white chocolate is significant, sugar complements it and enhances the overall taste. Do not omit this ingredient.
  • Eggs: Large eggs serve as a binding agent, ensuring the brownies hold together effectively.
  • Salt: Adding a generous pinch of salt helps balance the sweetness of the white chocolate and sugar. For added flavor, consider sprinkling flaky salt over the brownies after baking.
  • Baking Powder: Baking powder is essential for breaking up the dense texture, resulting in the perfect brownie consistency.
  • White Chocolate Chunks: I recommend chopping a chocolate bar into chunks and folding them into the batter for the best flavor and texture. While white chocolate chips can be used, I prefer the taste and texture of chopped chocolate bars.

Matcha white chocolate brownies Tips

Don't Panic If Your White Chocolate Seizes

In case you accidentally overheat your white chocolate and butter, causing the chocolate to seize and appear curdled or lumpy, don't fret. Since we're incorporating other ingredients into the brownies, this texture issue is perfectly normal! Just continue with the recipe, and your brownies will still turn out perfectly delicious.

Opt for High-Quality Matcha Powder

The name "matcha brownies" speaks for itself! Since matcha takes the spotlight in this recipe, using a premium-quality matcha powder ensures the best flavor and color outcome. I prefer using high-quality culinary grade or even ceremonial grade matcha for optimal results. If you're unsure about the different types of matcha available, check out my matcha truffle post where I discuss the variations.

Lower-quality matcha tends to impart more bitterness and astringency, and its color appears dull green or brown rather than vibrant green. For truly decadent matcha brownies with a rich green hue, investing in quality matcha is key!

Avoid Overbaking

As mentioned earlier, matcha powder can dry out batters, leading to dry and crumbly baked goods. To prevent this, it's crucial to monitor the baking time closely.

The perfect matcha brownie should appear slightly undercooked when removed from the oven, with an inserted toothpick yielding a few gooey crumbs. Remember that the brownies will continue to cook as they cool on the countertop, so it's essential not to overbake them.

Allow Brownies to Chill Completely Before Slicing

If you're eager to indulge in a warm slice of brownie, you're certainly free to do so! However, for those seeking perfectly cut slices, I highly advise allowing the brownies to cool and chill completely before slicing. This ensures that they set into their desired shape, resulting in clean slices and impeccable edges. To achieve even sharper slices, I recommend using a knife run under hot water.

Estimated cost

Based on the ingredients listed in the recipe, the estimated cost of making these matcha white chocolate brownies would depend on various factors such as the prices of ingredients in your local area, the quality of ingredients you choose to use, and whether you already have some of the ingredients on hand.

However, based on a rough estimate, the cost of the main ingredients like white chocolate, matcha powder, butter, sugar, eggs, and flour, along with any optional ingredients like additional white chocolate chunks, would likely add up to around $15 to $25. This estimate could vary significantly depending on individual circumstances and choices made while purchasing ingredients.
